Beyonce Reveals Psoriasis Struggle
Beyoncé talks about her battle with psoriasis and shares insights into her hair journey in Essence magazine’s March/April issue, discussing the personal significance of her hair care rituals from childhood to using scalp oil for psoriasis treatment.
“The relationship we have with our hair is such a deeply personal journey,” she told the magazine while promoting her new haircare line, Cécred. “From spending my childhood in my mother’s salon to my father applying oil on my scalp to treat my psoriasis— these moments have been sacred to me.”
Scalp psoriasis occurs when the body produces too many new skin cells, causing the immune system to mistakenly attack healthy cells, resulting in thick, scaly, and dry patches of skin. Beyoncé highlighted the significance of salons and barbershops as community spaces where people can find solace, feel beautiful, share stories, and pass down wisdom, emphasizing their importance as consistent gathering places and sanctuaries for many.
Beyoncé shared that her personal experiences inspired the name of her brand, Cécred, by combining the end of her name with the beginning of the word “sacred.” Reflecting on her past, she recalled moments from her mother’s salon, daily rituals with her father, and years of developing a hair care line, which she described as the journey of Cécred.

Additionally, Beyoncé discussed her decision to cut her hair into a pixie cut in 2013, highlighting how certain hairstyles are associated with significant moments in life and how cutting her hair was a big emotional transformation for her.
Beyoncé underwent a hair transformation almost a year after giving birth to her first child, Blue Ivy Carter, explaining that cutting her hair was a rebellion against societal expectations and a way to liberate herself after becoming a mother. She described the decision as intentional and a significant step towards making bold choices in her life and career.
Beyoncé’s interview, where she discussed her hair journey, came shortly after she announced her upcoming country album during the 2024 Super Bowl. She teased new music in a commercial with Verizon, accepting a challenge to “break the internet,” and announced that Act II of her album will be released on March 29, along with two new tracks: “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages.”
