Is Jonathan Majors Responsible for the Avengers Delay?

Marvel recently made an announcement regarding the postponement of two highly anticipated films, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, by a year.

While other films from Marvel were also delayed, the extent of the postponement for these two movies has led fans to speculate about the reason behind it. One theory circulating among fans is that Marvel is considering recasting Jonathan Majors’ role as Kang.

Jonathan Majors made his first appearance as He Who Remains in the Loki series, where he revealed the existence of various variants of himself across the multiverse, some known as Kang.

The primary villainous Kang variant made his debut in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Kang is being set up as a major antagonist in this phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and will play a significant role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

However, shortly after the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Jonathan Majors faced legal trouble as he was arrested on charges of assault and harassment.

There is an ongoing case related to an alleged domestic dispute involving Majors and his girlfriend. Marvel has chosen to remain silent on the matter, possibly because they want to avoid taking premature action against Majors.

However, recasting the role would likely be a time-consuming endeavor, which could explain the delays of the two films heavily involving Kang. Marvel is likely waiting for the case to conclude before making any official decisions about Majors’ future with the studio.

It’s important to note that the delays of these major films cannot be solely attributed to the possibility of recasting Jonathan Majors.

The ongoing Writer’s Guild of America strike is also a significant factor, as many of these films may still be in the process of being written or require script rewrites. By pushing back the release dates, Marvel gains some breathing room while negotiations between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers continue.

While Jonathan Majors has undoubtedly left a strong impression as Kang in Loki and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, it’s worth considering that the character has multiple variants who do not necessarily have to resemble Majors, given their origin from different universes.

If Marvel were to replace the character, Kang would be relatively easy to explain the change in appearance. However, it would still be a significant decision to make, and it’s understandable that Marvel has not made any official public statements regarding the matter at this time.

We may gain some insights and answers to these questions when Loki Season 2 premieres on Disney+ in October. Jonathan Majors is expected to appear in some capacity during the second season, as the end-credits sequence featuring the “Victor Timely” Kang variant in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has been confirmed as a scene from the upcoming season rather than just a standalone stinger.

If Marvel does decide to recast Majors as Kang, it would make sense for them to introduce the new actor or actress in Loki Season 2, allowing the character to be established before any major appearances in movies.
