Timothee Chalamet’s Wonka makes history by surpassing Johnny Depp’s Willy Wonka in earnings
Recent box office reports suggest that Johnny Depp, known for his incredible career, is in a role where another actor’s performance is considered better.
In the 1971 film “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory,” Gene Wilder played the iconic Willy Wonka, starting the Willy Wonka film series. Although not an instant commercial success, the Mel Stuart-directed film, based on Roald Dahl’s novel, gained a cult following over time. Gene Wilder’s portrayal of the eccentric chocolatier became a beloved classic after widespread praise.
In Tim Burton’s 2005 version of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” Johnny Depp played Willy Wonka, grossing $475 million despite mixed reviews. Now, Timothée Chalamet takes on the role in “Wonka,” directed by Paul King.

The story revolves around Noodle (Calah Lane), a likable orphan who becomes Wonka’s constant companion in their amazing adventure. They evoke sympathy from the audience, with Wonka holding the last chocolate bar created by his jungle-dwelling candy-maker mother for inspiration.
The film introduces three powerful businessmen who control candy manufacturing and manipulate the city’s corrupt police force. With Wonka now grossing $500 million at the box office, it has surpassed Johnny Depp’s version. SK Pop reported Timothée Chalamet’s film reached this milestone within months of its December 8, 2023 release, quicker than Depp’s film took a year.
The movie has earned an impressive $176.2 million in the United States and a remarkable $329.1 million globally, highlighting its success beyond just being an enchanting story. Chalamet, not seeking advice from Johnny Depp, took on the role in his own way, proving successful.
“Wonka” is expected to be available for digital purchase around February 2024, and as a Warner Bros. production, it will eventually be on Max, likely streaming by March 2024.
