Clothing retailer Gap has filed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against rapper Kanye West. The 45-year-old musician previously had a successful partnership with Gap, but their collaboration soured last year. West accused the retailer of failing to release his clothing line as promised and neglecting to open stores specifically designed to promote the Yeezy x Gap collaboration.
In a notable incident, West made headlines in August when he sold his Yeezy Gap line out of what appeared to be rubbish bags in the store. Despite receiving criticism, he dismissed the backlash and proclaimed himself an “innovator.” Following this incident and West’s involvement in an anti-Semitism controversy, Gap decided to remove the Yeezy line from its stores, a move that was followed by sportswear retailer Adidas.

Gap is now suing Kanye West regarding a specific building used to sell the Yeezy Gap range. The company claims that West should be held financially responsible for potential damages, as they themselves are facing a lawsuit from the owner of the building they leased for the collection. According to documents obtained by TMZ, Art City Center, the owner of the LA storefront, alleges that unapproved alterations were made to the building and that Gap should restore it. Gap argues that West should be liable for the expenses.

Furthermore, Gap has filed a separate lawsuit against West, stating that their contract with the rapper absolves them of liability for any claims related to the situation. They are seeking the amount they anticipate will be required for the restoration, as well as legal fees, totaling approximately $2 million (£1.6 million).
The collaboration between Gap and West has faced numerous challenges. Initially, West drew attention for selling the clothes in “rubbish bags,” reminiscent of a thrift store experience. Many questioned the disconnect between the high price tag and the seemingly low-budget presentation. Yeezy Gap hoodies, for instance, were priced at £260 in the UK.
Months later, Gap abruptly severed ties with the musician, removing the line from stores and shutting down the website. This decision followed West’s offensive comments about the Jewish community in a series of social media posts. While initially standing by his remarks, West eventually apologized for the distress caused. In response, Gap released a statement expressing their disapproval of anti-Semitism, racism, and hate in any form. They emphasized that West’s recent comments and actions were unacceptable, hateful, dangerous, and contrary to the company’s values of diversity, inclusion, mutual respect, and fairness.
