A woman in North Dakota murdered her boyfriend because he was about to break up with her and had recently inherited a large sum of money.

The woman, Ina Thea Kenoyer, 47, was arrested and charged with murder on Monday. Steven Edward Riley Jr., the victim, was 51 years old. The police believe the woman did it for monetary gain. According to Minot Police Department Capt. Dale Plessas, this case was extremely complicated.

Riley became ill when he went to see his lawyer on September 3 to claim his large inheritance, according to witnesses. He died the next day in the hospital. An autopsy revealed that he had been poisoned with antifreeze, which police believe Kenoyer gave him.

Before she was arrested, Kenoyer posted strange things on Facebook, claiming Riley committed suicide and that she was innocent.

Kenoyer said she wanted to share Riley’s huge inheritance, which she thought was about $30 million, with his son. She believed she should get the money because they were in a common-law marriage, but North Dakota doesn’t acknowledge this type of relationship.

Also, Riley had talked about ending their relationship after getting the money, so investigators think she might have poisoned him to keep the fortune.

Kenoyer is accused of AA felony murder, which is the most severe form of murder in North Dakota. She is currently being held without bond at the Ward County Detention Center, and based on court documents, she is representing herself.
