Will Smith is in hot water, facing a seven-figure lawsuit over his 2019 film ‘Gemini Man’.
Science fiction author Kissinger Sibanda claims the movie ripped off his novel ‘The Return to Gibraltar’, released in 2011. He’s suing Will, 55, and other big-name defendants for copyright infringement.
Kissinger says his book is about an African American who’s cloned and used in a time-traveling program without his permission. He claims the defendants struggled to make the movie until his book came out, then changed their marketing strategy to copy his work.
The author alleges he shared his book idea with Will’s stunt double in 2012 and sent a copy to a top Hollywood talent agency. He’s demanding $1.7 million in damages, claiming the film stole from his work.
Kissinger says, “The publication of ‘The Return to Gibraltar’ provided a free meal for the defendants… they explained cloning and its science in the context of a complete story.”
Will and the other defendants haven’t responded yet. The film had a reported budget of $138 million but only brought in $173 million worldwide.
