An autopsy report reveals that Tori Bowie, the renowned U.S. Olympic champion sprinter, passed away due to complications arising from childbirth.
Tori Bowie, who achieved great success with three medals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, tragically lost her life last month at the age of 32. The report, issued by the medical examiner’s office in Orlando, Florida, states that Bowie was approximately eight months pregnant and displayed signs of being in labor when she was found deceased on May 2. She was discovered in bed within a “secured residence,” and the report suggests the presence of potential complications such as respiratory distress and eclampsia. The autopsy report concludes that her passing was a result of natural causes.
The statistics released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that Black women in the United States face the highest maternal mortality rate, reaching 69.9 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2021—almost three times higher than the rate for white women.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office responded to a well-being check in early May at a residence in the area, concerning a woman in her 30s who had not been seen or heard from in several days. This woman was later identified as Frentorish “Tori” Bowie.

Toxicology results returned negative, and the autopsy report lists bipolar disorder in her medical history.

Bowie spent her childhood in Mississippi, having been raised by her grandmother since infancy. Initially considering herself a basketball player, she reluctantly discovered her talent for track and field as a teenager, excelling as an elite sprinter and long jumper. She attended Southern Mississippi University, where she swept the long jump NCAA championships in both the indoor and outdoor events in 2011.
Bowie’s accomplishments reached their pinnacle at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she secured a silver medal in the 100 meters and a bronze medal in the 200 meters. Additionally, she played a crucial role as the anchor leg in the gold-winning 4×100 relay team alongside Tianna Bartoletta, Allyson Felix, and English Gardner.
A year later, Bowie claimed victory in the 100 meters at the 2017 world championships held in London, while also contributing to the gold medal triumph of the 4×100 relay team.
