Authorities say that following a family quarrel over Christmas presents, a 14-year-old boy in Florida fatally shot his older sister, 23-year-old Abrielle Baldwin.

The teen had been out shopping on Christmas Eve with Abrielle Baldwin, his 23-year-old sister, as well as his mother, 15-year-old brother and sister’s children, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said during a news conference.

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said the boys fought in the store over presents and expenditures during the family dispute. The argument carried over to their grandmother’s Largo home, where the 14-year-old supposedly threatened to use a semiautomatic weapon to shoot his brother in the head.

Not wanting to get into a confrontation, the older brother pushed his younger brother out of the house.

Baldwin, the 23-year-old sister, interrupted the quarrel by pleading with her brother to stop saying, “‘You all need to leave that things alone. You’re trying to start it, but why? Christmas is here.” In response, the 14-year-old used foul language and threatened to shoot her and her child. At 1:45 p.m., he is said to have shot Baldwin in the chest, killing her.

The infant, in a carrier, was uninjured. With his own pistol drawn, the 15-year-old brother came out and shot his younger sibling in the stomach before running away.

Baldwin was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Gualtieri said. The bullet traveled through her left arm and into her chest, popping both of her lungs. She suffered internal bleeding and was unable to breathe.

The wounded 14-year-old boy underwent surgery and is now in stable condition at a hospital. He’s been charged with first-degree murder, child abuse and being a delinquent in possession of a firearm, police said. The Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney’s Office will review the case and decide whether the teen will be charged as an adult.

The older brother faced charges of attempted first-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence. Both siblings had previous arrests related to car burglaries.
