Al Pacino convinced Johnny Depp to return to directing for their biopic, “Modi,” which is presently in production and tells the story of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani during World War I in Paris in 48 hours. This is Depp’s first directorial endeavor since 1997’s “The Brave,” in which he co-starred with Marlon Brando.

“Embarking on this cinematic journey as the director of Modi has been an incredibly fulfilling and transformative experience,” Depp said in a statement.

“I would like to express my profound gratitude to the entire cast, crew, and producers for their unwavering commitment and creativity.

“To Al, who requested that I make this film – how could I refuse Pacino? A sincere acknowledgement for generously contributing his talent and dedication to this project.

Modi is a testament to the collaborative spirit of independent filmmaking, and I am excited to present this unique and compelling story to the world.”

Alongside Stephen Graham, Sally Phillips, and Antonia Desplat, Italian actor Riccardo Scamarcio will play Modigliani in the movie. “Modi,” the film, will portray Modigliani’s tumultuous 48-hour expedition through the alleys and streets of World War I-era Paris.

Modigliani’s attempt to stop his career and leave the city while he’s on the run from the police is greeted with resistance from other bohemians, and the situation gets worse when he meets a collector who has the power to change his life, according to their press release.

This is Depp’s first production since he starred in “Jeanne du Barry,” directed by Maïwenn, a film that depicts the life of Louis XV and his mistress, Jeanne. Maïwenn was recently fined €400 (£344) for spitting on a French journalist in front of the Cannes Film Festival in 2023.

When Depp spoke in December at the frontman of the Pogues Shane MacGowan’s burial, MacGowan’s widow disclosed that the singer had urged Depp to extend forgiveness to his ex-wife Amber Heard, with whom Depp had engaged in a string of highly publicized legal disputes. Depp triumphed handsomely in his slander action against Heard in May 2023.
