Renowned actress Dame Maggie Smith has died peacefully in hospital, her sons announced today.
Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens issued a statement confirming their mother’s passing:
“It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith.”
Dame Maggie, a private person, was surrounded by friends and family at the end.
“She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September,” her sons said.
The legendary actress leaves behind two sons and five loving grandchildren, who are “devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.”
Her sons expressed gratitude to the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital staff:
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff… for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days.”
The family requests privacy during this difficult time:
“We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time.”
