Coco Gauff Makes History: First American Teen to Win US Open Title Since 1999

At just 19 years old, Coco Gauff overcame a slow start to win her first Grand Slam title. She rallied from a 2-6 hole to defeat Aryna Sabalenka in a nail-biting US Open final, 6-3, 6-2. The raucous audience enjoyed Gauff’s outstanding performance and was enthralled from the start.

Coco Gauff, a native of Florida, is the first adolescent to win the country’s top tennis competition since Serena Williams in 1999, and he or she now joins the ranks of legendary American tennis players.

Gauff’s week in New York turned into a loud declaration of “Welcome to the big time!” in contrast to Williams’ emotional departure at the US Open the year before as she ended her historic career.

Since her incredible Wimbledon debut at the age of 15, when she became the youngest qualifier in the history of the event and made it to the fourth round, Gauff’s victory has been somewhat expected. Her path brought her to the French Open major final of the previous year, when she finished as the runner-up.

She now holds the most important honor in her budding career, and she stands tall. After a shocking first-round defeat at the All England Club in July, Gauff’s win gave her a stunning 12th straight victory and an incredible 18th victory in her previous 19 matches.

Sabalenka, who was seeded sixth, was a strong opponent, but Gauff shown great tenacity on Saturday. She confronted the overwhelming might of Sabalenka head-on, gradually adjusting to the assault and retaliating with shot after shot.

To start the third set, Gauff broke Sabalenka’s serve. He displayed flawless court coverage and finished the rally with a decisive volley, which was followed by a jubilant fist pump and a thunderous cry of victory.
