Alaska Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing After Window Blows Out
Alaska Airlines had to make an emergency landing in Portland when a window exploded, leaving a hole and yanking goods from terrified customers. The crowded flight took off from Portland International Airport at 5 p.m. on a Friday, heading for Ontario, California. When the window broke, it had to return quickly.
The Federal Aviation Administration said that strong winds caused a “pressurization issue,” and oxygen masks fell on the 171 passengers as commotion broke out when the plane returned to Portland airport.
Fearful passengers captured the horrific event on camera and posted it to social media over the course of the following fifteen minutes. The footage showed a sizable hole in the side of the aircraft where objects, including cell phones, were sucked out.

Fortunately, the Boeing 737-9 plane landed safely, and there were no serious injuries, although a flight attendant suffered minor harm. One passenger, Vi Nguyen, recounted to the New York Times that she was awakened by a loud bang and saw the side wall of the plane missing.
Her initial thought was, “I’m going to die.” Another passenger, Elizabeth Le, shared with the NYT that a teenage boy lost his shirt, and his skin was red and irritated as he sat with his mom in their seats.
Elizabeth Le was able to remain composed despite finding it alarming that flight attendants were helping customers relocate to a different area of the aircraft.
In a statement, Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci announced the temporary grounding of the airline’s 65 Boeing 737-9 aircraft in order to conduct a thorough examination and maintenance as a precaution. In addition to expressing regret to the impacted passengers, Minicucci said that the National Transportation Safety Board is heading an inquiry to ascertain what caused the event.
