Mother Charged for Baking Her Newborn Baby in an Oven
A mother is accused of killing her baby by mistakenly thinking it was a crib and accidently putting it in the oven. One-month-old Za’Riah Mae was discovered dead from burn injuries, and Mariah Thomas, 26, has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Reports of the child’s unconsciousness prompted police to visit the Kansas City residence. The day after Thomas celebrated her birthday, the youngster covered in burns was found by the officers.
There were reports of smoke odor in her residence, and the child’s clothes were blackened and burned into her diaper, according to an arrest warrant. At approximately 1:00 pm on Friday, Za’Riah’s mother called her grandfather to let him know that “something was wrong with the baby” and to come home.
According to court documents, he allegedly told the police that Thomas had admitted to mistakenly placing the one-month-old kid in the oven when he smelt smoke and found her deceased in her cot.

When police got there, they discovered Za’Riah in a car seat with what seemed to be thermal injuries all over her body. They also found and took a burnt baby blanket as evidence.
Grieving friends speculated that Thomas’s mental state may have played a role in the occurrence; one friend described Za’Riah as a happy, vivacious child who never stopped smiling.
