According to a recent study by authors Lynn E. McCutcheon, Ágnes Zsila, and Zsolt Demetrovics, people who are obsessed with celebrities may perform worse cognitively, pointing to a possible connection between celebrity obsession and intelligence.

In the study, 1,763 adult Hungarians completed tests measuring their fluid intelligence, such as a 30-word vocabulary test and a digit symbol substitution test. In order to gauge their degree of celebrity worship, participants also responded to statements on the Celebrity Attitude Scale, such as “I am obsessed by details of my favorite celebrity’s life.”

The study found that lower performance on the digit symbol substitution test and a 30-word vocabulary test was associated with higher Celebrity Attitude Scale scores, even after accounting for demographic and socioeconomic factors.

The study’s authors presented their findings, though it’s unclear if celebrity worship causes poorer cognitive function or vice versa.

They wrote: “We found a weak tendency for those who showed the strongest admiration for their favourite celebrity to have lower cognitive skills, suggesting that the earlier results were not due just to chance.”

The researchers explained that their study supports earlier findings indicating that excessive behaviors like celebrity worshipping might affect cognitive functioning in relation to related research.

They proposed that the increased concentration and effort put into this behavior might take over an individual’s life. Regardless of age or education level, high levels of admiration for celebrities may be linked to decreased performance on tasks requiring cognitive effort, even though they may not be a strong predictor of worse cognitive performance.

“Our results also support previous findings showing that excessive behaviours such as celebrity worshipping can possibly impair cognitive functioning, presumably due to the increased focus and energy invested in this behaviour that becomes dominant in the individual’s life.

“Although celebrity admiration seems not to be a strong precursor of poorer cognitive performance, high levels of admiration can be regarded as one contributing factor to lowered performance in tasks requiring cognitive effort, independently from education or age.”
