Minaj initially mentioned Roman on Twitter, declaring a name change and expressing that she would only respond to Roman Zolanski. Two months later, she revealed Roman as her “twin sister,” providing limited information but describing Zolanski as crazy and notably female.
At that point, Roman was more of a dark and one-dimensional personality, characterized by being “crazy” and little else.
In the documentary “My Time Now,” Nicki Minaj explained that Roman is a boy living inside her, expressing things she doesn’t want to say. Despite asking him to leave, she mentioned he stays for a reason, brought out by people, and now won’t leave. Roman’s personality is characterized as arrogant and insensitive.
The transition from female to male for Zolanski seems to be a retcon, portraying Roman as always male, although initially, the character was referred to as female.
Martha Zolanski, Roman’s mother, was introduced as a foil in “Roman’s Revenge,” portraying an older woman with strong respect for tradition and rules, emphasizing Roman’s extravagant and bold behavior. Their relationship is noticeably strained.
In contrast to his initial appearances, Roman’s personality in later tracks like “Where Them Girls At,” “Dance (A$$) (Remix),” “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” “Starships,” “Turn Me On,” and “Pound The Alarm” became more carefree and fun-loving.

This presents Roman as a rebellious and comical character rather than necessarily malevolent. These songs depict a happier side of Roman, showing that he is not always as angry as initially portrayed, as Minaj mentioned that Roman does not care anymore.
Roman is usually depicted as blond and dressed in dark clothing, with an exception in the “Monster” music video where he had black hair. Despite this, Minaj mentioned Roman likes experimenting with pink and green wigs and wearing lipstick. Some comparisons have been drawn between Roman and Eminem’s alter ego, Slim Shady.
