Following the tragic death of the American ice hockey star, Adam Johnson’s fiancée posted a heartfelt tribute. The 29-year-old died on Saturday after suffering a severe neck injury during a match in Sheffield.

The game between the Nottingham Panthers and the Sheffield Steelers was called off in the 35th minute as medics rushed to the ice.

Fans were asked to leave the Utilita Arena in Sheffield, while Johnson’s teammates formed a protective circle around him. During this time, his fiancée, Ryan Wolfe, dashed down from the stands to be by his side and began to pray. Wolfe has since paid tribute to the 29-year-old, who was also from Minnesota, on Instagram.

“My sweet, sweet angel. I’ll miss you forever and love you always,” she wrote.

Riley Tufte, Johnson’s former college teammate, mentioned that Johnson and Wolfe got engaged in the summer and were living together in England.

At a vigil outside Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena, Panthers fan Hazel Woods, who attended the game, shared her account. Says : “His teammates looked horrified and banded together around him to shield him from the crowd. They were amazing.

“Then the paramedics arrived and a protective screen was put around. We were all praying and hoping he would make it but sadly he didn’t. Our hearts go out to his family and friends and teammates.”

Johnson was rushed to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, but he died on Sunday. He played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Malmo Redhawks, and Augsburger Panthers before moving to Nottingham this season.
