5 Celebrities Banned from the Oscars
The 96th Academy Awards happened at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on Sunday, March 10. Here’s a list of celebrities who have been banned from attending the Oscars.
Bill Cosby

After drugging and sexually abusing basketball coach Andrea Constand in 2018, Bill Cosby received a lifetime ban from the Oscars. The Daily Mail reported that the academy stated, “The Board continues to encourage ethical standards that require members to uphold the Academy’s values of respect for human dignity.”
Richard Gere

In 1993, Richard Gere’s speech before the Oscars about the “horrendous, horrendous human rights situation” in Tibet led to a 20-year academy ban. In 2003, his ban was lifted.
Roman Polanski

French-Polish director Roman Polanski was given a lifetime ban from the academy in 2018 because he was found guilty of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.
Will Smith

After the 2022 Oscars Slapgate incident, Will Smith was banned from the academy for 10 years for slapping Chris Rock over a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head. Despite the ban, Smith was allowed to keep his Oscar for Best Actor, and he later stated that he respected the academy’s decision to bar him.
Adam Kimmel

Due to his past sexual offenses, actor and cinematographer Adam Kimmel was not allowed to attend the Oscars. The 64-year-old, who is well-known from movies like “Capote” and “Never Let Me Go,” acknowledged that he had raped a girl who was 15 years old.
