Will Smith’s Comments on the Possibility of Divorcing Jada Pinkett Smith
Famous actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s marriage has come under scrutiny recently, largely as a result of Jada Pinkett Smith’s open admission of a romantic “entanglement” with another person and her husband’s widely reported protective reaction at the Oscars last month.
Despite persistent rumors of an impending divorce, neither party has explicitly stated their intentions to sever their relationship. But throughout the years, Will Smith and his wife have talked publicly about getting divorced numerous times.
The couple were married in December 1997, while Jada Pinkett Smith was two months pregnant with their first child, Jaden Smith.
Will Smith’s second marriage came after the collapse of his first marriage to Sheree Zampino, which he previously described as “the worst thing in my adult life.” This incident clearly shaped his views on marriage and divorce.
“Divorce can’t be an option. With Jada, I stood up in front of God and said, ‘Til death do us part, “So there are two possible outcomes. One, we are going to be together ’til death, or two, I am dead.” he told MTV News in 2006.

Jada Pinkett Smith has also expressed similar sentiments.
“I told Will from the gate, I said let me tell you something, ‘If you marry me, know this: we’re gonna be together. We’re going to be under the same roof’… for me personally, I knew that there was no reason that he and I would ever [divorce],” she said of a conversation before their wedding on a 2018 episode of Red Table Talk.
Reports indicate that both partners may have had extramarital affairs despite their claims of commitment to their marriage. In particular, during a well-known episode of Red Table Talk in July 2020, Jada Pinkett Smith candidly acknowledged her long-standing relationship with musician August Alsina.
She said that while she was temporarily apart from Will Smith, her friendship with Alsina changed into “a different kind of entanglement.”
Will Smith said that his wife wasn’t the only one having affairs outside of their marriage in a 2021 interview with GQ.

It is believed that problems that arose during Jada Pinkett Smith’s 40th birthday celebration in September 2011, which was planned by Will Smith, are what led to this departure from traditional monogamy. According to E! News, Will Smith admitted in 2018 that his wife called the party “the most absurd display of my ego,” which made him angry for a brief period of time.
Will Smith stated in a 2018 episode of Red Table Talk that they had to essentially “rebuild our marriage” after the birthday party and the alleged outburst, but divorce was never even brought up as a possibility.
“Because I had been divorced before I wasn’t getting divorced again,” he said.
Jada Pinkett Smith made it clear throughout that time that divorce was not an option. But they did decide to take a break, and that’s when August Alsina started to play a romantic role in her life.
Jada Pinkett Smith stated that her time with Alsina was a period of self-discovery and said, “I learned so much about myself.” She and her spouse eventually made amends.
“You gotta go through some s–t to get the answers. And I’m just happy because I definitely believe that you and I, we never ever, ever thought that we would make it back,” she said during the 2020 Red Table Talk episode.
