In a new memoir obtained by People, Will Smith reveals a challenging moment in his relationship with his son Jaden. The actor recalls Jaden’s request for emancipation at age 15, saying, “What was worse was that Jaden took the hit.”
This experience followed the disappointing reception of their joint film project, “After Earth,” which Will describes as “an abysmal box office and critical failure.” He also writes, “Jaden had faithfully done everything that I’d instructed him to do, and I had coached him into the worst public mauling he’d ever experienced.”
So, what does emancipation mean? Essentially, it’s a legal process allowing minors to break free from parental control. If granted, Jaden would have gained control over his life, including education, career choices, and finances.
Emancipation offers benefits like adult responsibilities, decision-making power, and financial independence. However, it also comes with limitations. Emancipated minors still face restrictions on marriage, alcohol consumption, driving, voting, and education.
In Jaden’s case, emancipation would have meant freedom to choose projects and negotiate salaries without his father’s involvement. Ultimately, Jaden decided against it, but the experience left a lasting impact on Will.
