Will Smith Gives Update on ‘I Am Legend’ Sequel With Michael B. Jordan

On Saturday night, Will Smith revealed new details about “I Am Legend 2” at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. According to Smith, the upcoming sequel, in which he acts and produces alongside Michael B. Jordan, is based on the alternate ending featured in the 2007 film’s DVD release, in which his character survives, as opposed to the theatrical version, in which he dies.

At the third Red Sea Film Festival, Smith spoke about “Bad Boys 4,” confirming that he and co-star Martin Lawrence would reprise their roles from the previous sequels of the original 1995 detective movie. Smith was one of several Hollywood A-listers in attendance.

“I have a call with Michael B. Jordan tomorrow. We’re really close, script just came in,” Smith said of “I Am Legend 2” at one of the festival’s In Conversation events. “You have to be a real ‘I Am Legend’ buff to know this, but in the first, theatrical version, my character dies, but on the DVD there was an alternate version of the ending where my character lived. We are going with the mythology of the DVD version. I can’t tell you anything more, but Michael B. Jordan is in.”

Smith humorously referenced his response to a remark regarding his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head in his early self-deprecating reference to the 2022 Oscars ceremony scandal. He began with a humorous reflection on his early science and math abilities, saying that he had always loved puzzles and problems and had even started making up his own.

Smith shared his journey, revealing his initial passion for rap and later recognizing the transformative power of acting to explore and shape the human experience. He emphasized that movies revolve around people navigating life’s challenges, aiming not just to survive but to thrive in the existential struggle.

Reflecting on mentors, he highlighted the impact of working with Tommy Lee Jones and Gene Hackman, acknowledging their influence in elevating his acting skills. Despite his impressive track record, Smith expressed a preference for projects, whether blockbuster or modest, as long as they were good and provided learning opportunities.

For him, the essence of a blockbuster lies in touching hearts and creating an impactful cinematic experience, citing his commitment to delivering genuine performances even in special effects-driven films like “I Am Legend.”

Smith expressed his excitement about becoming a mentor for the new generation of filmmakers and teaching the art of filmmaking, emphasizing the potential for global collaboration in storytelling.

He highlighted Saudi Arabia as a burgeoning film community and stressed the importance of sharing local stories on a global scale to foster understanding and healing.

Smith envisioned a future focused on creating bridges through shared narratives, believing that political means might not be the catalyst for necessary change. In conclusion, he reflected on the challenges of the past few years, stating that they had clarified his mission to stay true to himself and his goals, irrespective of external applause.
