Even though he rose to fame as an A-list star and became the highest-paid actor thanks to a series of multibillion-dollar blockbusters, Johnny Depp has never expressed much desire to play a conventional action hero. With its enormous expenditures and striking cinematography, the Pirates of the Caribbean television series tended more toward epic fantasy.

Even in films like Once Upon a Time in Mexico and Public Enemies, where a conventional action hero character may be expected, Depp selected supporting roles or depicted real-life figures.

Johnny Depp took an unprecedented step in 1995, starring in the action thriller Nick of Time, which deviated from his normal oddball roles in independent cinema. The film is set in real time, with Depp’s character, an accountant, being told to assassinate a politician within 75 minutes in order to save his daughter.

Unfortunately, the results were not favorable, as Nick of Time earned little appreciation from reviewers and performed poorly at the box office. Despite this, Depp was unconcerned with the film’s response because he had taken on the movie to demonstrate a different side of himself and collaborate with Christopher Walken, not for its monetary success.

Johnny Depp explained to The Washington Post that he took on the role in Nick of Time because he liked the script and wanted a change from his usual eccentric characters, aiming to play a more conventional character for a shift.

Despite being aware of potential accusations of selling out, he defended his decision to work on the film, expressing that it wasn’t for money or commercial success. Depp admitted to Gainesville that he knew the movie might not do well critically or commercially but clarified that his motivation was the opportunity to collaborate with Christopher Walken and director John Badham, rather than any financial gains or mainstream success.

Despite the fact that Nick of Time was unlikely to be a commercial or critical success, Depp stood by his performance in the film. He stated that he took on the project in order to work with John Badham and Christopher Walken, not for financial gain.

Though he appreciated the script’s Hitchcockian quality, his primary driving forces were both personal and professional. Strangely, he later worked with Walken on Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, which was a huge hit, taking home an Academy Award and surpassing Nick of Time at the box office by a factor of over 25. As a result, Nick of Time became an afterthought in Depp’s long filmography.
