It was widely believed that the Smiths were the ideal celebrity family before the world found out about the drama between Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, and singer August Alsina. But as it turns out, they are facing their own challenges and issues, just like any other typical family. A devastating choice made by Jaden Smith was one of the hardest things they had to deal with in the past.
Jada revealed how her kid told her in 2013 that he wanted to be freed and live on his own for his 15th birthday in an episode of her online interaction show, “Red Table Talk,” from 2018. The 52-year-old actress told her mother Adrienne Banfield-Jones and daughter Willow Smith, who co-host the show, how miserable she felt at the time and how it was one of the most painful moments of her life. Though heartbroken, Jada recalled believing her son was correct and it was time for him to move out.
The mother of two said that Jaden’s request didn’t actually surprise her. She recalled telling her husband that even as a little boy, he was mature for his age, and they would be fortunate to have him in the family till he is sixteen.

Even though Jaden was living in a “bubble” of fame, Jada understood why he wanted to go early. She wisely said, “Letting him go sooner would mean he’d come back faster,” as she wrapped up. Fortunately, Jaden decided against carrying out his plans and, at the age of 18, formally moved out of the Smith residence in 2017.
Will, meanwhile, responded to his son’s desire for emancipation with a same level of empathy. The ‘Aladdin’ actor stated in an interview that he and his spouse didn’t really think punishment was necessary and that their kids were capable of defending their choices.
The 55-year-old actor previously said to E! News that he and Jada tried to give their children as much autonomy as possible from an early age, so they could understand the repercussions of their choices without having to be punished.
