Stephen A. Smith expressed difficulty in watching any of Will Smith’s movies since his infamous Oscar slap in 2022. During a recent episode of his show, he stated that Will ought to personally speak to the Black community about the altercation involving Chris Rock.
“In the age of mental illness, the comedian is not okay,” Smith stated. “Chris Rock is damaged. He will never get over that. Ever.”
He continued, “Will Smith has expressed regret. I’m not insisting that he is obligated to apologize. What I’m trying to convey is that as I observe him and Martin Lawrence promoting this film, I strongly believe that the reason he hasn’t addressed the issue is because the studios are discouraging him, and there’s a certain responsibility that comes with that. It’s understandable, I understand. However, at some point, he needs to have a conversation with the Black community. You can surround Will Smith with as many white people as you want, but Black individuals have admired and respected him for many years”.
Smith emphasized that, while he respects Will, he believes Will still has an obligation to repair his relationship with the Black community.
“You need to address why you did that. It’s mainly us in the Black community who have loved and supported you, watching you succeed on a global platform and then slap one of us,” he added. “Many people haven’t forgiven that. Many find it difficult to just go to the movies to watch you. I’m one of them, and I’ve never skipped a Will Smith film.”
Stephen A. Smith’s opinion could be biased, especially considering the success of “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” which exceeded expectations by grossing $56 million in the domestic market and $104 million globally during its opening weekend.
