Happy About The New Tariffs

If you woke up on January 2nd feeling like the New Year was already looking bright, MTN Ghana just gave you one more reason to smile. In a move that’s music to the ears of every data-heavy streamer and long-distance caller. The telecommunications giant has officially slashed tariffs across its entire range of products and services.
Whether you’re topping up for that late-night “Happy New Year” call or renewing your monthly data bundle, things just got a whole lot cheaper. Here is everything you need to know about the sudden change.

Here is What Actually Changed!

MTN Ghana is not on a random act of kindness; like other businesses, they are staying in sync with the government’s brand-new VAT Reform Tariffs.

As of January 1, 2026, the government, through the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), rolled out a major overhaul to the Value Added Tax system regime. According to the GRA “…One of the good things about the new law is the elimination of the COVID-19 levy. Also, we have eliminated decoupling. For example, it means if you have an item that is Ghc1,000, you charge 2.5% GETFund on the 1,000; you charge NHIA 2.5% and the VAT of 15%… so in total your rate is 20%.

Again, one major change is that the VAT registration threshold for businesses selling goods was raised big time. The initial threshold was as low as GH¢200,000. This has however been raised to GH¢750,000. The move was envisioned to give incentive to small and medium scale start-ups to survive and scale up sustainably.

So, MTN did not waste time — they are among the first big service providers to update pricing according to the new VAT rules. In order to stay compliant and pass those savings directly to you, MTN hit the ‘refresh’ button on their pricing as well.

The Midnight Makeover

To make this happen, MTN did not just flip a switch. They carried out a massive system maintenance window. In the early hours of January 2, between 12:00 am to 4:00 am. While the world was sleeping – well, except the night owls – MTN’s engineers were hard at work recalibrating the digital infrastructure. The move was to ensure that every cedi you spend now reflects the lower tax rates.

Here are a few everyday products and services that were updated:

What This Means for You

  • Lower Prices Across Board: This is not just for data or just for voice. MTN confirmed the reduction applies to all products and services.
  • More Value for Money: Your usual “10-cedi top-up” or data bundle will now feel a little more substantial.
  • Seamless Transition: After a brief four-hour window of services suspension, everything is back online and running at the new, improved rates.

To some, this is just about cheaper phone calls and data. However, this move is bigger than that. It is a signpost showing that policy shifts like the VAT reform can have a tangible impact on everyday cost of living. When big companies like MTN change prices in line with tax policy, consumers feel the effect right away.
