Samara Joy’s soul-stirring night at Jorgensen
Samara Joy, a two-time Grammy winner in 2023 for Best New Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album for “Linger Awhile,” made a comeback appearance at the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts on October 20, 2023.
The setting was lovely, evoking the thrill of wandering through Central Park while the leaves were falling and the coziness of a wet afternoon spent in a local coffee shop. Joy’s voice had a profound effect on her audience, reaching their hearts, minds, and souls.
The band, which included accomplished musicians including drummer Evan Sherman, trombonist Donovan Austin, saxophonists David Mason and Kendric McCallister, bassist Michael Migliore, and pianist Cameron Campell, made a lasting impression.
Everyone in the room was emotionally moved by their music, and this resulted in a close bond being formed between Joy, the crowd, and the band.
Joy stood at the side of the other musicians during their amazing solos, demonstrating her sincere admiration for the other performers.
The show was visually gorgeous in addition to having excellent music. An additional layer of emotional depth was added by the lighting, which was essential in creating perfect synchronicity with the music.

Joy told a personal tale about writing a song that perfectly captured the spirit of real love after being inspired by a TikTok trend. The song’s emotional impact was increased by the romantic atmosphere created by the changing lights.
Samara Joy’s appeal went beyond just her music; it also included her engaging personality and the band’s extraordinary talent.
The band played a variety of tunes, from Austin’s cheerful “Sweet Pumpkin” to “Guess Who I Saw Today,” a moving song about infidelity. The latter demonstrated a brilliant piano and voice duet that painted a nuanced portrait of the complex essence of love.
Near the end of the performance, she began to discuss her raw, heartfelt emotions after finding out she had won the Grammy awards.
“And I’m like half asleep, like I wasn’t even — I was too nervous to watch the actual nomination livestream, so I was like: I’m just going to find out […] but twenty minutes away from Penn Station, I got a flood of texts from everybody,” she said.
“When I tell you my heart dropped, it was like out there on the tracks or something,” she continued. “As soon as we got off at Penn Station, I was everywhere. [My friend] couldn’t even really video me fast enough because I was too busy running around.”
