Joy, who performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival the year before, has now reached new heights and won two distinguished Grammy Awards: the coveted Best New Artist and the famous Best Jazz Vocal Album for her masterwork, “Linger Awhile.”

She will perform at the prestigious Jimmy Lyons Stage on Sunday, September 24, where she will be joined by a fantastic group that includes Luther Allison on piano, Michael Migliore on bass, and Evan Sherman on drums.

This extraordinarily talented musician effortlessly carries on the legacy of the jazz greats who came before her while exuding an air of preternatural composure. She won the fiercely tough Sarah Vaughan International Competition in 2019, demonstrating her exceptional talent and commitment.

Joy obtained the prestigious title of an Ella Fitzgerald Memorial Scholar just two years later, while she was still completing her studies as a vocal major at the State University of New York at Purchase, further establishing her position as a rising star in the jazz constellation.

Joy is able to connect with listeners of all ages thanks to her smooth scatting, her multi-octave range, and love of carefully selecting songs. Catherine Russell, who will perform on the festival’s Garden Stage on Sunday, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Esperanza Spalding, and other musicians share a similar musical style with her. By acting as the genre’s collective future ambassadors, these musicians alleviate any concerns about its economic potential.

Joy, who is from the Bronx, was raised by gospel music royalty. Her father went on tours with the illustrious Andraé Crouch, while her grandparents founded the renowned gospel group, The Savettes. Without a doubt, Joy’s tremendous talent and craftsmanship are built upon this rich musical tradition.
