Argentine authorities have announced the death of former One Direction singer Liam Payne, 31, in Buenos Aires.
Local news outlet La Nacion reported Payne fell from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel, citing emergency services. Argentina’s Todo Noticias TV channel stated Payne fell into the hotel’s courtyard.
Liam Payne was visiting Buenos Aires to support his former bandmate Niall Horan’s musical performance. He rose to fame in 2008 as a member of One Direction, a boy band formed on the British reality TV show The X Factor, alongside fellow contestants Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik.
One Direction sold over 70 million records globally. Payne debuted solo in 2017 with “Strip That Down” and released LP1 in 2019. His latest single, “Teardrops,” dropped earlier this year.
Just before his reported death, Payne posted on Snapchat: “Today, we ride. We’re going to ride some horses… Think I’m going to play polo again.”
Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system, confirmed an investigation and autopsy.
