Man ‘strangles heavily pregnant girlfriend to death’ in suspected honour killing

Saga Forsgren Elneborg, a 20-year-old woman who was seven months pregnant, was found dead at her home in Örebro, near Stockholm. Her boyfriend, Mohamedamin Abdirisek Ibrahim, 22, originally from Somalia, killed her in April last year because he didn’t want to introduce a pregnant Saga, who was not of the same culture, to his Muslim family, according to prosecutors.

They explained that Ibrahim felt he must date someone from his own culture, and dating a woman who was not of the same culture was unacceptable to him. Saga and Ibrahim had been in a relationship for two years, which he had kept secret from his mother.

Saga’s family, through their lawyer, expressed the anguish they’ve endured since her death in April last year.

Police have charged the Somali man with the murder of his seven-month-pregnant girlfriend, but it seems he hasn’t been charged with the murder of the unborn child.

A detailed arrest report, spanning a thousand pages, was issued following the charge, including images of the crime scene in their bedroom, depicting a lamp cord.

Prosecutor Elisabeth Anderson stated, “Mohamedamin Abdirisek Ibrahim killed Saga Forsgren Elneborg by suffocating and strangling her, causing pressure on her neck, impacting her trachea and blood supply to the head. She added, “I believe the murder occurred due to a sense of honor, as the man wanted to preserve or restore his and his family’s honor by killing the woman carrying his child.”

Text messages between them from April last year showed Ibrahim planning to disclose their relationship and impending parenthood to his family.

In these messages, Ibrahim expressed nervousness about revealing the news to his family, while Saga reassured him.

Prosecutors allege that after these exchanges, Ibrahim went to Saga’s apartment and violently strangled her to death.

The child – a boy – also died inside Saga’s womb, prosecutors said.

He had also previously suggested to Saga that she have an abortion after discovering she was expecting a child, the text message also revealed.

There is no evidence to suggest Ibrahim’s family were involved in the Saga’s death, local media said.

Saga’s mother told Nerikes Allehanda : “She was so happy. She would move to a new apartment and start her life as a mother. This is the worst thing imaginable.”

Ibrahim will appear in court on April 10 and the trial will last 15 days. He denies any wrongdoing.
