For the past ten years, Johnny Depp has covertly had one-of-a-kind fragrances created that are specific to each of his film personalities. The 60-year-old actor recently made headlines for extending his $20 million deal to serve as the brand ambassador for Dior’s Sauvage fragrance. He revealed his lifelong interest in the meaning of odors.
He revealed to the South China Morning Post in response to the topic of if smelling something helps him become lost in a character:
“Absolutely! I have a friend who’s made fragrances for me for various characters… . It probably started about 10 to 12 years ago or something.
It works because the character now has his own scent, his own something that I can use as a sensorial device, really. Sometimes you pick up a fragrance and you smell your mom’s cologne or perfume.
That obviously brings up a memory, and you’re directly somewhere else. Instead of using all of your senses to help you travel to a place, you can relive these moments simply by scent.”
