The mock sale directed customers to similar “deals” on other publications’ integrity, including the Los Angeles Times for $3.99. However, attempts to purchase Bezos’ own “spine, soul, and human decency” resulted in an error message.
Critics have denounced the timing and taste of Bezos’ joke, given his ownership of the Washington Post and ongoing concerns about editorial independence. Bezos’ relationship with the Post has faced scrutiny, despite the paper’s assertions of editorial autonomy.
