Jada Pinkett Smith Says Chris Rock Asked Her Out on a Date amid Rumors She and Will Were Divorcing

In her soon-to-be-released book “Worthy,” Jada Pinkett Smith is open about her relationships with her husband, actor Will Smith, 55, and comedian Chris Rock, 58.

In Jada’s upcoming book, she describes Chris allegedly inviting her on a date, which is a noteworthy revelation. She mentions that this took place at a time when rumors were flying around about her and Will maybe breaking up. Jada stresses that Chris apologized sincerely for the event.

“I think every summer all the reports would come out that me and Will were getting a divorce. And this particular summer, Chris, he thought that we were getting a divorce. So he called me and basically he was like, ‘I’d love to take you out,'” she recalls in her interview with People. “And I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ He was like, ‘Well, aren’t you and Will getting a divorce?’ I was like, ‘No. Chris, those are just rumors.’ He was appalled. And he profusely apologized and that was that.”

Jada goes into more detail about the long-lasting repercussions of the well-known 2022 Oscars incident, in which Will interrupted Chris after he made a joke about Jada’s hair and challenged him. Jada tells People that since that incident, she hasn’t spoken to the comedian.

Despite the silence, she expresses her optimism for a resolution, saying, “Here’s my wish: I simply hope that all the misunderstandings surrounding this can be resolved and that peace can be restored.”

Specifically in relation to the 2016 Oscars, the 52-year-old actress examines any potential misunderstandings between her and Chris. She was a vocal supporter of the #OscarsSoWhite movement, which sought to address the dearth of diversity in nominations, at that time. Jokes about Jada were part of Chris’s set that year as the host.

Jada expresses regret for not offering support at the time, admitting she might not have completely understood the strains Chris was dealing with.

“Chris came down to the end of the stage and tried to apologize to me. He said, ‘I didn’t mean you any harm.’ I said, ‘I can’t talk about this now, Chris. This is some old s**t,'” she recalls. “I thought this was [about] the Oscar 2016 and … their stuff that they had before I even came into the picture in the late ‘80s. I’ve got to leave that to Will and Chris to talk about, but they got their stuff for sure.”

Jada reveals that she and Will have been living apart for seven years in a sneak peek of her conversation with Today’s Hoda Kotb. Despite not being formally separated, they started living apart in 2016 after realizing that they had been harboring excessive expectations of one another.
