Actress Jada Pinkett Smith discussed pay equity and how her marriage affected Hollywood executives’ willingness to compensate her in a recent interview with NPR’s It’s Been a Minute, revealing that some would say, “Well, you don’t need it. You’re married to Will.”

Jada Pinkett Smith explained that pay inequality influenced her decision to act less and focus on producing, wanting to address the issue and use her influence behind the scenes. She expressed resonance with Taraji P. Henson’s comments about pay parity, referring to Henson’s viral SiriusXM interview in December 2023 where she said, “the math ain’t matching.”

“And also wanting to get on the other side to kind of help remedy that as a producer and then just wanting to bring more of my influence behind the scene,” she continued. “It’s not to say that I won’t get in front of the camera, but what it takes for me to get in front of the camera.”

In an interview with TODAY co-anchor Hoda Kotb, Pinkett Smith described her split from Will Smith as not just “a divorce on paper” but “a divorce” emotionally. She explained that by 2016, they were exhausted from trying to make it work and stuck in their own ideals of what the other should be. Despite this, Pinkett Smith vowed that there would never be a reason for an official divorce, and she remains committed to working through any challenges they face.
