Gabrielle Union Says She Used To Date Light Skin Guys To Validate Her Worth

Actress Gabrielle Union revealed her past struggles with colorism and self-acceptance in a candid conversation on Ashley Graham’s podcast, Pretty Big Deal.

Union admitted to previously seeking validation through relationships with light-skinned men. “I somehow thought I was more visible and real and valid and worthwhile if a light-skinned boy found me attractive,” she shared.

This desire for validation stemmed from internalized biases against her own dark skin. “Like it was somehow negating my darkness,” Union explained.

After overcoming her own struggles with colorism, Gabrielle Union now teaches her stepsons to appreciate beauty in all forms. “I want you to see women are beautiful in every shade, shape, race, ethnicity, religion – there’s beauty along the spectrum.”

Union previously felt inadequate due to her skin tone, sharing in her book, We’re Going To Need More Wine, “I wasn’t black enough” or was seen as “white” by her family.

To young Black girls, Union says: “Baby, you’re worthy from birth. You’re worthy as a thought. Don’t be afraid to take up space, live your authentic life.”
