FUBAR Gives Arnold Schwarzenegger His Most Fun Role in Years

Earlier this year, a TV adaptation of True Lies, the 1994 James Cameron-directed action comedy starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis, was launched by CBS. The show featured Steve Howey from Shameless and Ginger Gonzaga from She-Hulk in the lead roles, taking on the characters originally portrayed by Arnold and Jamie Lee. However, the series failed to generate much attention and was canceled after airing just 13 episodes.

Now, Netflix introduces FUBAR, an unofficial remake of True Lies. While it shares similarities with the original, FUBAR focuses on the dynamic between a father and daughter rather than a husband and wife.

What sets FUBAR apart is the casting of Arnold Schwarzenegger himself, bringing back the iconic star from the original film. Despite its frequent laziness and cheap production values, Schwarzenegger’s involvement and a deliberate embrace of the Dad TV concept are likely to make FUBAR far more successful than the official CBS version, which failed to make an impact.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Role in FUBAR

In FUBAR, Arnold Schwarzenegger portrays Luke Brunner, a CIA veteran who, despite being in his mid-70s, appears about a decade younger. Luke eagerly anticipates retirement and the opportunity to mend his relationship with his ex-wife, Tally (Fabiana Udenio), whom he pushed away with his constant deceit about his double life. However, before he can bid farewell to his life as a spy, Luke is thrust into one final mission.

This mission involves Boro Polonia (played by Gabriel Luna from The Last of Us), the grown son of a terrorist Luke eliminated early in his career. To Luke’s astonishment, his own daughter, Emma (Monica Barbaro from Top Gun: Maverick), whom he believed to be working for a non-profit organization, is undercover within Boro’s operation. The revelation exposes the shared web of deception between them, as Luke and Tally had believed he was merely a gym equipment salesman.

When Boro manages to escape, Luke’s intended last job transforms into a series of subsequent assignments. This time, he is compelled to work alongside Emma, resulting in an uncomfortable merging of their professional and familial lives. The blurred boundaries between work and family create tension and unease for both father and daughter as they navigate their intertwined roles.
