An Italian footballer, Giovanni Padovani, has been sentenced to life in jail for fatally beating his ex-girlfriend, Alessandra Matteuzzi, 56, with a hammer, baseball bat, and bench. Alessandra had reported him for stalking before the attack outside her home in Bologna in August 2022.

She was on the phone with her sister Stefania, who heard her screams as Giovanni Padovani assaulted her with the objects. Padovani, a former centre-back for Sancataldese and also a former model, attacked Alessandra after his team instructed him to stay away from a training session.

Stefania told a local TV station: “She got out of her car and started screaming, ‘No Giovanni, no, I beg you, help.’ I was on the phone and immediately called the police, who arrived quickly.” After they broke up, Padovani kept messaging and calling her, leading her to report him for stalking. Despite this, he continued to damage her car, tamper with her utilities, and even attempted to climb onto her balcony.

A neighbor said, “She was very scared of him because he kept coming back, and she didn’t want to let him into the house.” Padovani tried to argue in court that he was not mentally stable during the attack. He said, “If I was fully aware and capable, then I deserve life in prison. But if you see something abnormal or unusual in my behavior, then no. I wasn’t well because a sane person doesn’t kill someone else. I’m living a nightmare, and I’m sorry, this is a heavier burden than prison.”

Stefania cried when she left the courtroom, saying, “Alessandra is gone, my sister is gone.” Bologna Chief Prosecutor Giuseppe Amato rejected accusations of judicial negligence, explaining that the investigation into Alessandra’s stalking complaint was paused because witnesses were on holiday. He stated, “We did our best,” noting that, at the time, it appeared to be “typical stalking behavior.”
