Elon Musk Files Lawsuit Against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman Over Contract Violation

Elon Musk feels that OpenAI has veered from its initial nonprofit goal, so he is suing the firm and CEO Sam Altman. Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI, says the company’s founding charter is violated by OpenAI’s $13 billion collaboration with Microsoft and its decision to keep the code of its newest generative AI products secret.

Musk left OpenAI to launch his own AI startup, xAI. He has filed a complaint in state court in California, requesting a jury trial and demanding that Altman, co-founder Greg Brockman, and OpenAI reimburse him for the money they made from the company. Musk claims that OpenAI’s rigorous control and transparency procedures, which were put in place to address worries about the risks of artificial generative intelligence (AGI), have been abandoned.

2019 saw the creation of OpenAI LP, a for-profit division of the larger business, by Altman, Brockman, and Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever. This quickly raised OpenAI’s valuation to $90 billion. Altman is commended for his achievement. According to the lawsuit, there was a leadership crisis last year when Altman was temporarily fired over worries about the potential perils of artificial intelligence (AI) but was later reinstated after Microsoft stepped in.

Thursday’s lawsuit repeats the claim that OpenAI has abandoned its nonprofit mission in pursuit of profit, with the complaint criticizing the lack of transparency surrounding Altman’s initial firing. While Microsoft is not directly named as a defendant, it is mentioned numerous times in the complaint, which also raises concerns about Microsoft’s influence over OpenAI and its economic position.

The lawsuit accuses OpenAI of becoming a closed-source subsidiary of Microsoft and developing AGI to maximize profits for the tech giant. Musk, who left OpenAI in 2018, is portrayed in the complaint as warning against the dangers of AI while framing the current OpenAI leaders as driven by greed and profit.
