Eddie Murphy slams David Spade, and calls his controversial SNL joke about his career ‘racist’

Eddie Murphy is speaking out against a joke made at his expense on Saturday Night Live (SNL), calling it a “cheap shot” and “racist.” In a recent interview, the comedy legend opened up about his experiences being the target of similar jokes throughout his career, sharing his thoughts on the hurtful humor.

In 1995, comedian David Spade, during his “Hollywood Minute” sketch on SNL, showed a photo of Murphy and commented: “Look children, it’s a falling star. Make a wish.”

Murphy, a former SNL comedian, felt hurt and betrayed by the remark, considering it a personal and racist attack on his career. He believed the joke required approval from producers, and was surprised it made it to air. The incident led to a 20-year hiatus from SNL for Murphy, only returning for the 40th-anniversary special in 2015. Despite this, Murphy has made amends with Spade and Lorne Michaels. Spade later acknowledged the harm caused by such jokes in his memoir.
