Ed Sheeran releases new single “Boat”

Ed Sheeran’s latest single, “Boat,” which serves as a metaphor for depression, has been released. The song is the opening track on his upcoming album, Subtract, and was written during a winter at the English seaside.

This release comes after his 14th chart-topping single in the UK, “Eyes Closed.” The music video for “Boat,” directed by Mia Barnes, depicts Sheeran being overwhelmed by waves, reflecting the singer’s recent comments on Instagram about the difficult period that inspired the album.

In February of last year, Sheeran collaborated with Aaron Dessner to record Subtract, following a period of personal struggles. Sheeran revealed on Instagram that his mental health and perspective on music and art had been affected by significant events that occurred at the beginning of 2022, including the loss of a close friend and his wife’s diagnosis with a tumor while pregnant.

Sheeran and Dessner wrote over 30 songs together, resulting in a final album of 14 tracks. This album, called Subtract, is part of Sheeran’s mathematical symbol series, which includes his previous albums, Equals (=) and Divide (÷). The album is set to release on May 5th, two days after his documentary, Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It All, premieres on Disney+.
