Ed Sheeran has recently completed construction on his personal private chapel, which includes its very own burial chamber. Situated within the expansive grounds of his East Suffolk estate, this religious structure with its distinctive flint walls has been in progress for over 19 months. The scaffolding and covering sheets have been removed, revealing the chapel to the local villagers for the first time.

Described in official planning documents, this boat-shaped edifice features an impressive 25ft circular tower and is intended as a sanctuary for Ed Sheeran and his loved ones.

A place for introspection, prayer, and relaxation, the chapel stretches 65ft in length and includes a spiral staircase. It’s located on the periphery of the singer’s estate, affectionately known as ‘Sheeranville’ to the locals, close to his hometown of Framlingham in Suffolk.

Ed Sheeran, 32, resides here with his wife Cherry and their two children. Their initial proposal for a larger chapel was denied by local council planners, partly due to objections from neighbors who argued that there were sufficient churches in the vicinity to cater to the residents.

Subsequently, the singer, who was reported to be valued at £300 million in the most recent Sunday Times Rich List, submitted a revised application in 2019 for a more compact structure, which was approved by the East Suffolk Council.

In January of the previous year, while Ed Sheeran was on tour in the United States, he was granted permission to include a 9ft by 6ft burial crypt within the chapel. This crypt has ample space to accommodate two bodies beneath a floor slab. Additionally, his proposal to install a 7ft tower lightning rod atop the chapel’s tower, designed to safely disperse a 300 million volt electrical charge, was also given the green light.

According to the planning documents, the positioning of the chapel on the eastern side of Ed Sheeran’s estate is significant due to the symbolic importance of the sunrise in both Abrahamic and oriental traditions.

It was emphasized that Sheeran’s chapel was not intended to overshadow the nearby medieval Church of England church in the local village.
