Dua Lipa is currently embroiled in yet another copyright dispute concerning her 2020 hit track, “Levitating.”
Musician Bosko Kante has come forward, alleging that Dua utilized a recording of his talk box in various remixes of the song without securing proper authorization.
This marks the third instance in which the artist has faced legal action in connection with this song. The latest development emerged as Bosko’s legal team filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles on July 31, as disclosed by Music Business Worldwide.
The suit asserts that Bosko originally contributed a talk box-infused track for the initial rendition of “Levitating,” featured on Dua’s 2020 album “Future Nostalgia.”
A talk box is a musical device that enables performers to modify their instrument’s sound using their oral articulations. However, Bosko’s legal argument contends that he did not grant permission for his track to be incorporated into subsequent versions of “Levitating.”
This includes iterations featuring rapper DaBaby, a remix with Madonna and Missy Elliott, and a performance at the American Music Awards.
Bosko’s lawyers have highlighted their client’s multiple efforts to resolve the matter amicably prior to resorting to litigation.
They assert that Dua Lipa and associated defendants exhibited an unwillingness to cooperate or acknowledge their responsibility in what they perceive as a blatant violation of Bosko’s copyrights.
The legal action demands restitution exceeding $20 million (approximately £16 million) on behalf of Bosko. As of now, neither Dua Lipa nor her recording label, Warner Music Group, have issued any response to these allegations. The BBC reported on Wednesday that they remain silent on the matter.
