Dead woman comes back to life moments before cremation
A woman who was severely burned in a fire woke up just before her cremation at a funeral home. She had been taken to the hospital but couldn’t afford further treatment.
Aamma’s husband, Sibaram Palo, thought she had died, so he arranged for her to be taken to the cremation ground in a hearse. He shared this with Times of India ‘We thought she was dead and informed others in the locality to arrange a hearse van to carry the body to the cremation ground.’.
One woman named K Chiranjibi, who was with Aamma in the hearse, said they were almost finished setting up the funeral pyre when Aamma opened her eyes. Chiranjibi mentioned they were scared at first because they had never seen such a thing before, though they had heard stories.
The hearse driver, Khetrabashi Sahu, who had originally picked up Aamma’s ‘body’ from her home at 9 am, was called back to the cremation ground only half an hour later to collect her alive and breathing.
Aamma was taken back home in the same hearse. The crematorium stated that locals don’t need a death certificate to perform the last rites of a family member.
In Indian culture, last rites are very important and connected to nature. When someone passes away, their body is laid on a grass mat or on the ground to symbolize returning to the earth’s embrace.

Special water is poured into the mouth, candles are lit, and a rice bowl is placed nearby. The body should then be taken to the crematorium with the eyes covered.
Fortunately, Bujji Aamma’s family missed this step, allowing them to witness her opening her eyes.
This isn’t the first time someone has been thought dead in India. Last October, a newborn baby was believed to be stillborn.
The event took place in Silchar.
The father, Ratan Das, 29, received the news at the private hospital right after his wife gave birth.
A death certificate was given, but it wasn’t until they reached the crematorium that the newborn baby started crying.
