Church of Satan Applauds Lil Nas X for ‘J Christ’ Music Video
Although one church has endorsed Lil Nas X’s music video for “J Christ,” it is unlikely that this will lessen animosity between Christians and Catholics. In the video, which also shows him doing a one-on-one basketball game with the devil and breaking his ankles, the controversial rapper plays Noah and represents Christ on the cross.
The lyrics, which include lines like “Back up out the gravesite/Bitch I’m back like J Christ,” reinforce the song’s religious theme. The Church of Satan accepts it despite opposition from some Christian artists and groups; magister David Harris calls the iconography “fantastic.”
Harris notes that Lil Nas X draws a comparison between his church’s belief in “lesser magic,” or the capacity to control others, and his raps about being viral. According to the magister, the Church of Satan isn’t obsessed with iconography like other churches are; instead, it emphasizes living life to the fullest, being loyal to oneself, and achieving personal success. They don’t get upset when the Devil is shown.

Harris has proof for his assertion because he previously gave his approval to Lil Nas X’s “Montero” music video, even applauding the scene in which Nas vanquishes Satan and assumes the throne. Magister Harris was a little bit disappointed in Lil Nas X; he was hoping for more. He thinks the rapper should direct a full-length movie because of his extraordinary talent.
Even though Lil Nas X claims to be divorced from the devil, it seems the Church of Satan is not distancing itself from him.
