Bernice Johnson Reagon, Founder of The Freedom Singers and Sweet Honey in the Rock, Dead at 81

Renowned civil rights activist, singer, and scholar Bernice Johnson Reagon has died, according to Courtland Cox and NPR. No cause of death was given.

Born in Georgia, she was raised with a passion for music and social justice.

Reagon co-founded The Freedom Singers, singing at civil rights events, and later formed the impactful group Sweet Honey in the Rock.

As a scholar, she studied Black musical history and created a Peabody-winning NPR documentary.

Her music and activism inspired many, making her a champion of civil rights and Black heritage.
