O.J.’s story began in San Francisco, where he grew up in the Potrero Hill housing complex. His parents, Eunice and Jimmie Lee, guided him through the early years, with Eunice working as a nurse’s aide and Jimmie Lee as a custodian and cook.
Things really took off for O.J. when he hit the scene at the University of Southern California. He was one of the all-time great college running backs. After spending two years at City College of San Francisco, he joined USC and made a splash. He even came in second for the Heisman Trophy in his first year, but hold on, it gets better.
Simpson’s electrifying 64-yard touchdown run against UCLA became the stuff of college football history. It was a jaw-dropping moment that still gets talked about today. And in 1968, in his senior year at USC, he finally snagged the Heisman Trophy.
Fast forward to the 1969 common draft. The Buffalo Bills, who were in the American Football League back then, used their first overall pick to select none other than O.J. Simpson. O.J.’s journey had its ups and downs, but he’ll always be remembered as a remarkable athlete with a complicated life. May he Rest In Peace.
