Ian McKellen Humiliated Will Smith for Refusing to Kiss Male Co-Star

The 1993 film “Six Degrees of Separation” delves into the real-life tale of David Hampton, a con artist who impersonated Sidney Poitier’s son. Starring Ian McKellen and a young Will Smith, the movie also featured Donald Sutherland.

However, a pivotal moment in the film underwent a change when Will Smith, portraying a gay character, hesitated to perform a kissing scene with his male co-star Anthony Michael Hall.

Openly gay Ian McKellen, sharing the incident, described Smith as a charming and talented actor but pointed out a peculiar decision. Smith refused to enact a scripted kissing scene with another male actor.

In response to this, McKellen decided to address the issue during an early preview. Outside the cinema, he publicly met Smith and administered a bold response to the refusal, giving him a significant kiss on the lips.

Reflecting on the incident, Smith later expressed regret for declining the scene. This sentiment stemmed from his usual approach as an actor who fully immersed himself in every role presented to him.

Acknowledging the missed opportunity, Smith conveyed remorse over not embracing the scene, recognizing the significance of committing wholeheartedly to the roles he undertakes.
