Kareem Abdul-Jabbar shares Update On Broken Hip After Bad Fall
After suffering a broken hip in a fall last week, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is recovering well. Joking around about it, he refers to himself as “Humpty Kareem.” The NBA legend stated he was on his way to The Manhattan Transfer’s performance at Disney Hall when the incident happened in a Substack update on Monday. With a humorous admission, he said he just tripped instead of saving a child.
In an image posted from his hospital bed, the 76-year-old is seen grinning broadly, suggesting that his recovery is progressing nicely. After thanking the first responders, Abdul-Jabbar pledged that he would soon get back on his feet. He joked that he and his new hip would be dancing (or swaying) to The Manhattan Transfer’s songs again as he sent his best wishes from the hospital.

Before he fell, Abdul-Jabbar, a longtime fan of The Manhattan Transfer, was scheduled to read a letter from Vice President Kamala Harris to the group, but he also joined them in commemorating their 50th anniversary.
This was the final performance by the legendary vocal group. Known for his pivotal role during the “Showtime” era of the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1980s, Abdul-Jabbar guided the team to five NBA titles. Though he had led the NBA in scoring for 39 years, LeBron James overtook him in February.
The Milwaukee Bucks’ all-time leader in rebounds, Abdul-Jabbar, was recently surpassed by Giannis Antetokounmpo. Abdul-Jabbar, who played for UCLA under the name Lew Alcindor, won six NBA MVP awards and talked about his fights with chronic myeloid leukemia in 2009 and prostate cancer in 2020.
