Safina Namukwaya, 70, of Uganda, achieved a remarkable feat in human endurance and medical advancement when she successfully gave birth to twins at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Kampala using in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Namukwaya is now the oldest mother in Africa to give birth, and the babies and mother are said to be doing well.

On her journey to motherhood, Namukwaya encountered numerous obstacles, including the divorce of her children’s father and personal tragedies like several miscarriages and her husband’s passing in the 1990s. She faced many challenges, but she showed incredible fortitude in overcoming social shame for not having children and succeeding against all the odds.

IVF treatment, which is used when a couple is having trouble conceiving naturally, allowed Namukwaya to become pregnant at an advanced age. Namukwaya’s pregnancy at age 70, despite the natural decline in fertility and increased health risks associated with advanced age, highlights the significant potential of IVF treatments, even though the success of such treatments depends on the woman’s age.

Namukwaya’s story is more than just a medical miracle or a personal victory; it brings to light larger social problems with reproduction and the expectations placed on women. One of the challenges Namukwaya faces is the stigmatization of childless women as a result of the pressure to procreate, particularly in some cultures. Her narrative speaks to the experiences of women everywhere, igniting an important discussion about age, fertility, and social conventions.
