California Centenarian Celebrates 79 Years of Marriage with Wife
African American residents of Union City, California, Oree and Lena McRae recently celebrated their 79th wedding anniversary. Lena, who is almost 97 years old, and Oree, who is almost 100, have a unique love story that dates back to when they were in high school in Arkansas.
According to what they told KTVU, that is where they first captured each other’s hearts. Lena was one of the most beautiful people on college, according to Oree, who can still clearly remember her remarkable beauty. Lena, too, couldn’t help but be taken to Oree’s charm and good looks.
The two wed at ages 20 and 17 in a ceremony officiated by a justice of the peace after a three-year romance. Since then, Oree and Lena have been together nonstop for about 80 years.

Oree pursued a job as a spot welder in Detroit after their journey, which started in Arkansas, took them there. They made a significant shift to the Bay Area in San Francisco in 1951, attracted by the region’s moderate environment. Before deciding to settle in Union City, where they had lived for the previous 30 years, they lived in San Francisco’s Bayview district for 30 years.
They lovingly nurtured six children along their wonderful journey, and today they enjoy being the proud grandparents to 25, great-grandparents to 15, and great-great grandparents to three.
Oree and Lena attribute their ongoing romance to having common interests and having a firm faith in Jesus. They radiate joy at having such a big, close-knit family, expressing their deep appreciation for the many decades they’ve spent together.
