Bull Riding Icon JB Mauney Calls it Quits Following Neck Injury
One of the best bull riders in history, J.B. Mauney, revealed to the ProRodeo Sports News on Tuesday that his historic career has come to an end due to a significant neck procedure he received on September 8.
When Mauney was thrown off by the powerful bull Arctic Assassin from Sankey Pro Rodeo & Phenom Genetics on September 6 at the Lewiston (Idaho) Round-Up Division 2 Xtreme Bulls competition, a significant neck injury resulted.
“I had surgery (Sept. 8) and they put a rod in and plates and screws (in his neck), and took a disc out,” said Mauney, 36. “Unfortunately the surgery has ended my bull riding career.”
Despite the fact that the surgery was successful, Mauney insisted that the injury forced him to give up bull riding.

“This is not the way I wanted to go out but everything happens for a reason,”
Mauney won two World titles between 2013 and 2015, according to The Llanelli Herald. He and Justin McBride share the record for the most televised victories in the Professional Bull Riders league (PBR), which is an incredible accomplishment.
Known as “Dragon Slayer,” Mauney established a reputation for himself by defeating some of the savagest bulls in the arena, including Asteroid, Bushwacker, and SweetPro’s Bruiser, to mention a few.
Up until Smooth Operator in 2019–2020, he rode every YETI World Champion Bull successfully during the course of his career.
Mauney ends his career tied with the prestigious Justin McBride for first place on the all-time list of event victories with an incredible 32 victories. Mauney is a top PBR competitor in many competitive categories.
