Tinashe discussed working with R. Kelly and clarified the circumstances that gave rise to their collaborative song. She disclosed that she was forced to take part in the project while she was tied to RCA, a label she left in 2019.
She was asked about her feelings over her old label’s desire to advance her career by teaming her up with R. Kelly and Chris Brown, both of whom have been involved in controversy in the past, during an interview on the Zach Sang Show. Tinashe grinned in response and then addressed the query.
“You think I wanted [to do those songs]? I literally block out that R. Kelly song from my mind — I forget that it even exists,” she said. “That is so embarrassing. That is so unreal that I even have a song with R. Kelly.” She added, “I was so young too, which is crazy because I feel like I did that song when I just signed to that label… I was probably like 20.”

The subject of Tinashe receiving criticism from the general public for her associations with both musicians was then brought up by Sang. He said that while the label actually pushed for these collaborations, it was the fans who appeared to think she engaged voluntarily. Tinashe continued, highlighting how the label gave singles a high priority.
She referenced the song she wrote with Chris as an illustration and said that everyone wanted it to be a huge moment and possibly a number-one smash. Chris was the label’s most well-known performer at the moment on rhythmic radio, and they felt that she required their backing.
” Tinashe continued. “Like for example that song with with Chris, that was a song that… we all wanted it to be this big moment — this big single. So I feel like in [the label’s] mind, they were like ‘You need the support.’ And [Chris] was like their biggest artist that they had on rhythmic radio at the time.”
